New Slains Castle

New Slains Castle

Controversial plans to transform Slains Castle into holiday apartments could be back on the table after a series of delays hit the restoration project. Proposals to convert the castle into a complex were first tabled by Edinburgh-based developers Slains Partnership in 2004. The £6m blueprint for the C16 ruin have been met with a backlash from residents who have campaigned for the site to be preserved as a testament to the history of Cruden Bay. The developers have been told that they don't need to carry out any work on their scheme until 2023. The move has sparked fears that the fortress, inspiration for Dracula’s Transylvanian lair, may not survive that long. It continues to deteriorate: it is at risk of crumbling into the sea.
