Buchan Ness lighthouse, Boddam

Buchan Ness lighthouse, Boddam

Along with Keith Inch, Peterhead, Boddam is the most-easterly point on the Scottish mainland - travel due south and the first land reached is Hartlepool. Peterhead Power Station is situated just north of the village.

It is a common misconception to believe that Peterhead is south of Inverness. The Highland capital, now a city, is in fact 108 miles due west. One for the quiz masters, name the four most northerly Scottish league football clubs and rank their stadium's GPS/latitude on a south-to-north basis. Inverness, Peterhead, Ross County (Dingwall) and the most northerly is Elgin City.

In 1827, the Northern Lighthouse Board was persuaded to build Buchan Ness lighthouse, although there was no foghorn until 1904. The modern electronic foghorn has been disconnected, and the lighthouse is now automatic, like all Scottish lighthouses.
